An exceptional example of a leather Gladstone kit bag by the renowned House of Finnigans, Manchester. Established in 1830, Finnigan’s became one of Britain’s most prestigious luxury luggage makers, celebrated for supplying beautifully crafted travel goods from Manchester and later New Bond Street, London.
What makes this particular bag truly extraordinary is its condition. Approaching 100 years old, it remains in remarkably preserved, near-concours condition — quite possibly one of the finest and straightest Gladstone kit bags you are ever likely to encounter. It shows minimal signs of use, suggesting it has only been carried on a handful of occasions throughout its lifetime.
Stamped on the bag is “Finnigans Bond Street, London – Made in England,” together with the original owner’s initials, “J.E.S.”, adding a distinctive touch of provenance and character.
The leather is beautifully supple, having been carefully nourished and maintained, with no rips, tears, or damage whatsoever. Every stitch remains tight and strong, while the original interior lining is exceptionally clean and well preserved. The brass hardware is immaculate, retaining a wonderful polished finish, and even the original leather retaining straps present almost as new.
Generously proportioned at 65cm x 36cm x 34cm, this is a substantial and practical travelling bag with ample capacity for touring or weekend luggage.
Craftsmanship of this calibre simply no longer exists. Finnigan’s luggage represented the very pinnacle of British luxury travel goods in the early 20th century, and surviving examples are increasingly difficult to find — especially in such astonishingly original condition.
For the collector of pre-war motoring accessories, the owner of a classic car, or anyone with an appreciation for the elegance and craftsmanship of the 1920s and 1930s, this is a truly outstanding and highly desirable piece.
